Modern sail and power boats now rely heavily on networks of personal computers for navigation, engine management, entertainment systems and boat administration.
The challenge is that they also connect these computers to other external systems, such as the Internet, by a variety of methods, depending on the boat’s location, including satellite, shore based wireless networks, telephone and modem, GPRS or GSM mobile data. As a result of making these connections, the on-board computer systems are exposed and vulnerable to attack from viruses, hacking, spyware and trojans. Such problems can cost the boat a great deal of money and reduce the communications capacity or credibility with owners and guests.
Our experience, is that boat crews do not have the time to understand or prepare for these threats. Nor do they have the time to become involved in setting up or maintaining network connections that function correctly, reliably, speedily and securely - both at sea and in port.
